The Römertor, or Wienertor as its also known, dates from the 4th century AD, making it one of the oldest buildings in Austria. The base of the horseshoe shaped defence tower is Roman but the upper part and roof have been remodelled more than once, most significantly around 1500 when the town’s fortifications were strengthened. Originally the Römertor had a drawbridge over the town moat but this was filled in 1771 and the drawbridge was replaced with a stone bridge. Surprisingly, the small rooms of the tower were occupied until the 1960s. On the town side there is a fresco depicting the legend of the Nibelung.
