To the Romans, Tulln was of immense strategic importance and they founded a military camp, Comagenis, here to help defend their northern frontier. The Römerturm, also known as the Salzturm, is a horseshoe shaped protruding western flank tower which was built around 300 AD during late improvements to the Roman camp’s fortifications. The tower has been in use continuously ever since, first for defence of the city, then as the city’s arsenal and as a salt warehouse. During renovation in 1984 is was found that the tower is largely original and so it ranks as one of the best preserved Roman buildings north of the Alps, certainly one of the oldest.
