The Römertor, or Wienertor as it’s sometimes known, is Traismauer’s most frequently photographed building. The gate is closely connected with the fortunes of the town and derives its name from Roman finds which were discovered in the 19th century. The town has been fortified for approximately 1700 years and it is likely that the Römertor is on the site of one of the earliest gate towers making it one of the oldest buildings in Austria. Its form must have changed over the years with progressive changes to the town’s fortifications, for example when a moat was added in the early 16th century. Indeed it was the site of anti tank barriers which were erected in 1945.
