For five hundred years history the northernmost part of the Roman Empire was delineated by the Danube. At Zeiselmauer, the Romans built a military post called Cannabiaca. The 4th century Fächerturm is the oldest visible Roman building in the town and was once a defensive tower at the north east corner of the Roman fortifications. The tower, once at least nine metres high, was designed to facilitate the defence of the adjacent walls. This example of the fan tower is the only one in Lower Austria.
