The late Roman castle, or burgus, was a square, fortified building situated at the north west corner of the Roman military camp. The stronghold, with a capacity for probably not more than fifty men, was at the heart of the camp’s fortifications. The building was originally three stories with an inner courtyard and a wooden roof and had a single entrance via a gatehouse. The burgus of Zeiselmauer/Cannabiaca is the only building of its kind in Austria.
