The collection of the Residenzgalerie, which was opened in 1923, contains paintings from the 16th to the 19th century supplemented by loans from Austrian museums and private owners. Amongst the highlights of the collection are Rembrandt’s ‘Portrait of his Mother at Prayer’, Rubens’ ‘Allegory of Karl V as Ruler of the World’ and Carlo Dolci’s ‘St. Catherine Reading’. The building dates back to about 1600 and was used in the 18th century to display the archiepiscopal collection of paintings.
