Schloss Rappottenstein was built to protect the Kuenring settlement of Rappottenstein in the 12th century. Over the centuries, the castle was repeatedly attacked but never fell to any of the attackers; rebellious peasants, Belgians and Swedes. As a result, the castle is particularlt well preserved with Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance features. In fact the imposing fortress buildings are an architectural treasure trove of immense historical importance, especially in respect of the Gothic features such as the vaulting.
