Johann Bernard Fischer von Erlach designed this stunning Baroque library, but it was completed by his son in 1726. Now the Austrian National Library, it was Imperial library until 1918 and houses more than 200,000 leather bound books, including the huge personal library of Prince Eugène of Savoy. The spectacular marble columns, gilded bookcases and intricately carved balconies are enhanced further with a magnificent fresco by Daniel Gran and his clever trompe l’oeil showing groups of scholars holding discussions.
