The Baroque exterior of the Landesfürstliche Burg belies its distinguished history. The building appears to have been constructed from the remains of much older structures, possibly parts of the first Ybbs castle, in the 14th century. The first recorded distinguished guest was the Emperor Maximilian I who stayed here in 1494 as he was passing through Ybbs. In 1521 the castle was visited by young Emperor Ferdinand I on a journey from Worms to Vienna to found the first Austrian parliament. In order to pre-empt an impending rebellion in Vienna, the Emperor opened the parliament in Ybbs. Later in the same century the castle seems to have lost its importance and today it houses a school for nursing.
