The Pulverturm can be found at the southeast end of the mediaeval city fortifications and was added in 1523. The fortifications, though by no means complete, are still easily identifiable today as is the moat around the city. The moat was cleverly designed to allow water diverted from the Danube to flow round the city and the outflow was situated at the Powder Tower. When, as military technology improved, the moat became ineffective as a means of defence it was drained and used as pasture for cattle. Nowadays the Powder Tower overlooks the gardens which have replaced the meadow.
