The Pilgrimage Church of Maria Roggendorf in the municipality of Wullersdorf possesses a wonder-working icon of the Madonna painted on leather and has been a place of pilgrimage since the 15th century. The first sanctuary was built here in 1291 and was replaced by a church dedicated to the Virgin’s Nativity in 1653. When this early Baroque building burnt down in 1695, it was rebuilt by the Italian architect Carlo Antonio Carlone. In 1795 Emperor Josef II forbid the pilgrimages as part of his secular policies and it wasn’t until 1924 that they were resumed. The sanctuary contains paintings by Kremser Schmidt.
