The Wallfahrtskirche Maria Ponsee was built in the 12th century on the site of an ancient chapel. The building was redeveloped in the 15th century in Gothic style with characteristic vaulting. The church’s impressive military tower is probably constructed from Roman masonry. Between 1716 and 1726, the church was extended and once again remodelled in the Baroque style to the plans of Jacob Prandtauer. The high altar does not have an altarpiece but a life sized statue of Mary which was washed ashore on the banks of the Danube in 1720. This event gave the church its status as a place of pilgrimage in the 18th century.
