Schörfling’s Pfarrkirche, dedicated to Saint Gallus, is a late Gothic hall church with three central pillars built by Stefan Wultinger around 1190. The church stands on the highest point in the town where there had previously been a wooden building erected by monks from St. Gallen. Inside the building there is a notable stone sculpture of St. Nilokaus, the patron saint of sailors and an interesting plaque commemorating the death of a local aristocrat in 1608. The plaque is a symbolic shield harking back to an earlier Germanic custom where a dead aristocrat’s weapons marked his grave. The church’s main entrance, which has a fine window, originates from the Baroque era.
