The early Gothic parish church, where Joseph Mohr, the librettist of "Silent Night, Holy Night" served as independent curate, was first mentioned in documents in 1359. the church was extended in the early 18th century. The church is dedicated to St. Rupert, who is regarded as the patron saint of miners within the region which formerly fell under Salzburg’s sphere of influence. Mohr died here in service in 1848 and was buried in Wagrain’s cemetery and, in the parish church archives there are some original of his original manuscripts.
