Waidhofen an der Thaya’s handsome Stadtpfarrkirche can be found at the highest point of the city, 510 metres above sea level. The church was originally Gothic in origin but at the beginning of the 18th century it was given the customary Baroque makeover. The new building was begun in 1713 with the construction of a 54 metre high tower to which was added a new nave, built over the original Gothic hall. After completion of the building, the old church, now contained within the new, was demolished. The church was originally surrounded by a graveyard and some of the old gravestones can be seen in the city walls close by.
