Although the building dates back to the mid 17th century, and was previously famous when the first water pipe in Vienna was installed in 1652, it was unveiled in its current form in 1860. It was the latest fashion in architectural terms and Heinrich von Ferstel, the designer, was inspired by Venetian-Florentine Trecento styles. Although ‘Café Central’, housed in the building, closed following World War II, it was restored and rejuvenated back to its ostentatious glory and Vienna’s most famous coffee house became a very popular and beautiful tourist attraction.
