Designed by secessionist architect Otto Wagner and completed in 1899 the Hofpavillon was originally conceived as a private railway station for the Imperial family when they travelled between the Hofburg and Schönbrunn. The domed waiting room of the Emperor is furnished in mahogany with gold fittings and decorations. At one end a painting by Karl Moll shows an aerial view of Vienna. Although Josef Maria Olbrich was also involved in the design this is one of the very few surviving interiors by Otto Wagner and is considered a superb example of the art produced around that period.
