Burg Ottenstein, located beside the river Kamp, was originally a fortified residence dating from the 12th century. From the 17th to the 20th century, the castle was owned by the Lamberg family. During the last century the castle suffered heavy damage being used as a training centre by the Germans and then occupied by the Russians after the Second World War. The building is now in the hands of the local energy supply company who have largely renovated it. During restoration work in the 1970s, the sensational discovery was made of a number of 12th century frescos, regarded as the most important in Austria. The castle’s other attraction is the unusual 17th century Päpstezimmer with 241 portraits of popes from St. Peter to Innocence XI.
