The present Rathaus was built under the orders of Markus Sittikus on the site of much older remains going back at least to the 12th century . The front of the building was remodelled in Rococo style in the 18th century. There are two ancient bells inside the distinctive octagonal clock tower as well as the oldest tower clock in Salzburg. The building was used as a court house but is now houses some municipal departments and private businesses. The well-known Säulenhalle of the city hall is used for various purposes, particularly as a gallery and showroom.
