The Alte Markt first came into use in the 14th century as Salzburg’s main market but nowadays it is known as a popular meeting place. The square contains an elaborate fountain, the Florianibrunnen, which is notable for the figure of St. Florian sculpted by Josef Anton Pfaffinger in 1734 and a renaissance basin constructed in 1587. In winter the fountain is protected by a glass pyramid. Near the Florianibrunnen are two landmarks; the smallest house in Salzburg, less than 1.5 metres wide, and the Café Tomasselli, the oldest coffee house in Austria and a favourite of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
