The Alte Bürgerhaus is an unmissable historic building in the centre of Waidhofen an der Thaya. The mediaeval town house survived into the 20th century unchanged and spared from modernisation except in respect of its Biedermaier period decore which is in sympathy with the ancient architecture. The building retains its original rural character and “black kitchen”. Part of the house is set aside for a memorial to the poet and dramatist Robert Hamerling who was born in Kirchberg am Walde in 1830 and died near Graz in 1889.
