The well preserved Altstadt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is characterized by the old world charm of its narrow streets, plazas, fountains, baroque buildings, cafes, stores selling designer fashions, museums and souvenir shops. It owes its unique existence to the profits made by the Prince-Archbishops in the 16th and 17th centuries from the salt trade which carried on from pre-Roman times. It is overlooked by its most striking monument, the Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of best preserved mediaeval castels in Europe. Famous Altstadt residents include the Mozart family and it is here that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed many of his most significant works.
