Construction of Austria’s first atomic power plant, and biggest industrial white elephant, in Zwentendorf on the Danube began in 1972. By 1978 there was public backlash against nuclear power and, as a result of a referendum, the government back tracked on nuclear power and work on the nuclear facilities was suspended. The station became a storage depot and donor installation for parts for similar German power stations and serves as a training and test facility. Other uses for the huge complex have been considered and part of it is presently used as a police academy.
