The Benedictine Nonnberg Convent, which was founded by St. Rupert’s niece St. Erentrudis between 713 and 715 AD, is familiar to many people as the convent in the musical film ‘The Sound of Music’, for it was here that Julie Andrews sang ’Maria’. But there is much more to the Convent than this. The large complex includes a late gothic church with a 12th century tower, cloisters, and chapels as well as the convent buildings. Benedictine nuns formerly had 14 convents in Austria, of which only the one at Nonnberg in Salzburg remains.
