This was the most recent addition to the Hofburg and was completed in 1913. Neo-Renaissance in style, it was designed by Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer who originally planned to mirror it, but finances ran out. Although it now houses the National Library’s main reading room and offshoots of the Naturhistorisches and Kunsthistorisches Museums it will be forever imprinted in people’s minds as the place of Hitler’s triumphant return to Vienna. Thousands assembled to celebrate the Anschluss, the merging of Austria into Germany by the Nazi’s.
