Opened in 1889 the building itself is a visual delight but the most famous exhibit, the ‘Venus of Willendorf’, is an 11cm high fertility symbol. The ‘Vivarium’ is a more recent addition and everything from clown fish and snakes to terrapins and Australian goldfinches can be seen. There are some impressive precious and semiprecious stone objects including a wedding gift from Maria Theresia to Franz Stephan; an ostrich made up of nearly 3000 precious stones and diamonds. Projections from microscopes and a 3D panopticon can be seen along with fossils, dinosaur skeletons and other interesting discoveries.
