Having seen the primitive, and sometimes barbaric, surgical techniques used on the battlefields, the Institute for Military Surgery was set up by Emperor Josef II in the late 18th century. Although the institute closed in 1872 the building now houses a museum. Antique medical instruments, documents, photographs and engravings are all on display but the most remarkable exhibits are the life-sized anatomical wax models created by Tuscan craftsmen as visual aids for future surgeons; nerves, muscles and veins all presented in glorious colour.
