The ‘Wagenburg’ is a collection of vehicles from the Imperial Court and includes carriages, sleds and sedan-chairs; an intriguing insight into court life. Exhibits include: a black hearse carriage used in the funerals of Emperor Franz Joseph; a 1914 car used to take the last Emperor into exile; the gold plated coronation carriage of Franz Stephan; and the matrimonial coach of Empress Elisabeth, also used by Napoleon when crowned King of Italy in 1805. Well worth a look are the miniature carriages used by the imperial progeny which include a phaeton with eagle wing mudguards, designed for Napoleon’s son.
