Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in the house at Getreidegasse 9, where his family lived on the third floor, on January 27, 1756. The house is now a museum, founded in 1880 by the International Mozart Foundation, and a place of pilgrimage for thousands of tourists each year. The exhibits displayed in the building include the violin played by the child genius Mozart, his concert violin, his clavichord and pianoforte. Other parts of the museum house exhibits showing the history of Mozart’s operas including models of stage sets from the 18th to the 20th century, Mozart’s links with University and influential figures in Salzburg, and a reconstruction of the Mozart family apartment as it would have been in the 18th century.
