This sculpture by Alfred Hrdlicka receives conflicting opinions, but there is no doubting its thought-provoking nature. There are four parts to the monument: ‘The Gates of Violence’ feature a montage of wartime images within the gates of a concentration camp; a crouching Jew recalling the treatment of Jews during the Nazi regime; Orpheus entering the underworld which reminds Austrians of the role they played in the atrocities; the 1945 declaration of Austria’s second republic cut into the stone. The monument has been poignantly erected where several hundred people were buried alive in a cellar during an air raid.
