With its beautiful houses and narrow cobbled lanes, this enclave is also one of the few parts of the city which still retains some of the original zig-zag ramparts of the Innere Stadt fortifications. This is a quiet, elevated place, seemingly hidden away from the frenetic activity of the Ringstrasse below. The cobbled lane which slopes away beneath the old defences was the filming location for the 1949 film ‘The Third Man’. Fans of the film should recognise the doorway of No.8 where Orson Welles’ character, Harry Lime, appears for the first time.
