The Schloss Mirabell was built in 1606 by Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau for his mistress Salome Alt. The palace was given its present name in 1612 by his successor, Markus Sittikus von Hohenems. Between 1721 and 1727 the palace was remodelled by the famous architect, Lukas von Hildebrandt and reconstructed, after the great fire of 1818, by Peter von Nobile. The palace has many interesting architectural features; the great marble staircase, the impressive marble hall and the neo-classical chapel in the east wing. Today the rest of the palace is occupied by the Mayor and council of Salzburg.
