The Minoriten monastery was established in Wels in 1280 and by 1300 a large early gothic church stood here, of which the choir remains today. Additions were made to the building in the 16th century and the baroque façade was installed following a fire in 1748. After the abolition of the monastery in 1784, the building was initially converted into a barracks and then, over the years, was used as a court room, prison, school and fire brigade headquarters. In 1997 the Minoriten monastery was renovated and revitalised as a venue for classical concerts, art exhibitions and conferences.
