A begging order of the Minorites, also known as the black Franciscans, settled in the north east corner of the city of Tulln some time in the 13th century. All that remains of the original Gothic building is the remains of a chapel which are incorporated into the present building. The monastery was abandoned during the Reformation and only resettled in 1635. Between 1713 and 1756, the monastery was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style, only to be dissolved in 1807. Since then the building has been used as a building school, barracks, low rent housing and fire brigade offices. Presently the building houses a museum and exhibition space.
