Michaelertrakt
Michaelerplatz, 1010 Vienna - Austria

Map

This southern gateway into the Hofburg began life in 1726; designed by Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach. It wasn’t until 1893 that the imposing neo-baroque green cupola and exuberant arch were completed by Ferdinand Kirscher. Rudolf Weyr and Edmund Hellmer’s statues and figures, which adorn the structure, include Heracles, the greatest of the Greek heroes, and represent Austria’s power over land and sea. The elegant proportions and grandiose design are worth a look for any lover of architecture.
