Fischer von Erlach’s ‘Vermählungsbrunnen’ was originally made of wood but his son replaced the fountain in 1792 with white marble with decoration of the figures by Antonio Corradini. Curiously, although commissioned by Emperor Leopold I to give thanks for his son’s safe return from the Spanish Wars of Succession, the fountain depicts the marriage of Mary and Joseph by a high priest. Corinthian columns, with rams head urns, hold aloft a gilded sunburst and bronze baldachin which is directly derived from Bernini’s baldachin in St. Peter’s.
