In the middle of the Domplatz is the Marienstatue, built in 1771 by Wolfgang and Johann Baptists Hagenauer. An intriguing feature of the column is that it is aligned with the cathedral, when viewed from the appropriate position at the back of the square, in such a way that the two angels on the façade of the cathedral appear to be crowning the Madonna. The structure has recently benefited from the addition of a modern, protective, pyramidal enclosure provided by the city architect. Every year Max Reinhardt’s production of Jederman is staged in the square adjacent to the fountain.
