The Loretokirche and convent were built for a group of Swedish refugee nuns from Landshut between 1633 and 1648. The buildings suffered heavy damage due to a fire in 1818 and bombing during 1944. The church was restored to its original condition in the period condition from 1947 to 1949. The establishment is most famous as the home of the Christ Child of Loreto (Salzburger Kindl), a miraculous statue of the infant Jesus dating from the 17th century which is reputed to be especially powerful in healing the sick. The Maria Loreto Convent is open to visitors year-round and Mass is celebrated there daily.
