The Landesmuseum, built by the architect Hans Hollein, is a multimedia adventure-museum focusing on nature, art and local history. The topic of water is the unifying theme of the museum which describes how Austria’s water systems, from the Alps and the Danube, influence the country’s environment, culture and economy. The museum also houses a fine art collection with masterpieces from the Middle Ages to the contemporary offering a comprehensive overview of developments in art in Austria. In the collection are, for example, works from great artists like Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, Friedrich Gauermann, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, Adolf Frohner, Arnulf Rainer, Elke Krystufek, Heinz Cibulka and Hermann Nitsch.
