Confusingly this, the lower of the two hills rising to the north of Vienna, was once called Kahlenberg but swapped its name with nearby Leopoldsberg when the Leopoldskirche was built in 1693. At 425 metres (1394 ft) high it offers a superb vantage point, the restored ramparts originally built in 1135 by the Brabenbergs, from which to view the city below. It has been convincingly proved that this was the site of a mass held by Jan Sobieski, the Polish King, ahead of his army relieving Vienna from the Turkish siege. The beautiful church displays prints and papers relating to the siege.
