Salzburg’s best known theatre offers productions from opera, operetta, musical theatre and ballet to drama in an extravagant setting. The renowned establishment owes its origins to the desire of Archbishop Hieronymus von Colloredo to make the theatre accessible to the widest possible audience. The 18th century building has been rebuilt twice, most recently in 1893 in the Baroque style, and has benefited from a series of renovations during the 20th century. The season at the Landestheater runs from September to June and in July and August the theatre hosts events for the Salzburg festival.
