Schloss Lamberg was first mentioned in 980. It lies in a commanding position towering over the confluence of the rivers Steyr and Enns at the northern end of the old town. The oldest part of the castle is the keep but the majority of the structure is Baroque, designed by Domenico d’Angeli, and dates from 1727-1731, when it was rebuilt following anextensive fire in the town. The castle library, one of the biggest private libraries in Austria, contains more than 11,000 books some dating back to the 16th century. The adjoining castle park lies along the western edge of the old town.
