Originally conceived as a private hunting ground by Emperor Ferdinand I, the Lainzer Tiergarten became a public nature preserve following the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This is a very popular, and free, place to see wildlife and to relax in beautiful surroundings. Wild boars, wolves, deer and the famous Lipizzaner horses are just some of the animals roaming free and there are endless trails for those desiring greater exertion. There are excellent views of Vienna from the Hubertuswarte, an observation tower built in 1927 and standing over 500m above sea level.
