Thanks to the Habsburgs this is one of the finest museums in Europe. The building itself, designed by Gottfried Semper and Karl Hausenauer, is a work of art, but along with the fourth largest collection of paintings in the world there are Oriental, Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities and artefacts. The 4km of galleries display a vast array of art including a superlative early Dutch and Flemish section. A mere tenth of the art collection is on display at any one time and it is impossible to see the whole museum in one visit.
