The Festung Kniepass, which is first mentioned around 1350, was built to control access and trade into the Pinzgau. Today this small fortification, virtually unchanged since the Thirty Years War, can be reached on foot from the base of the rocky crest on which it is built. The last military use of the fortress was in defence against the French in the Napoleonic wars, 1805 to 1809. In the following years it served as accommodation for forestry workers until, in 1988, it was repaired by the federal state. From the fortress, there are beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.
