This former station of the Viennese Stadtbahn, designed by Otto Wagner, was opened as Akademiestrasse in 1899. The twin entrance pavilions combine elements of art nouveau (or Jugenstil) to create a beautiful curving canopy; a green, wrought-iron frame inset with thin marble panels featuring a sunflower motif, and enhanced with beautiful golden trimmings. When, in 1981, the line changed from Stadtbahn to U-Bahn, the structures lost their function and became defunct. One pavilion now houses a café whilst the other is a temporary exhibition space for the Historisches Museum.
