Following the 1712 plaque epidemic this church was built as a dedication to 16th century saint Carlo Borromeo, a healer. Featuring a spectacular elongated ellipsoid dome and flanked by two enormous pillars modelled on Trajan’s Column this is one of the finest baroque churches north of the Alps. Commissioned by Emporer Karl VI and completed in 1737 the church once had a direct line of site to The Hofburg and was the parish church until 1918. Along with the dome, Fischer von Erlach’s sunburst above the main altar is worth a look, as is ‘Museo Borromeo’; housed upstairs.
