Although much of it was reduced to rubble during the February Uprising of the Austrian Civil War this tenement block is a fine example of municipal housing. Built between 1927 and 1930 by city planner Karl Ehn, it holds the holds the honour of being the longest single residential building in the world; 1100m long spanning four tram stops and including 1,382 apartments, play areas, gardens, laundromats, baths, kindergartens, a library, doctor’s offices, and business offices. It is situated on land that, until the 12th century, was under the Danube with water deep enough for ships to travel.
