Standing at 484 metres (1588 ft) high, the Kahlenberg mountain lies in the Wienerwald and is one of the finest places from which to view the city of Vienna. Once believed to be the place where the Polish King, Jan Sobieski, celebrated mass before his armies relieved the city from the Turks in 1683, it is now one of the favourite Sunday outings for the Viennese. Topped by a transmitter tower at Stefaniewarte, the summit, now the unofficial symbol of the mountain, the viewing platform also offers magnificent views over parts of Lower Austria.
