Although closed by the Nazis in 1938 this intriguing museum opened once again in 1989. The emphasis is obviously on Vienna but an overall picture of Jewish cultural and religious life is portrayed here. Along with the more traditional displays of Hanukkah candelabra and other ceremonial artefacts the museum boasts modern exhibits such as holographic images of Theodor Herzl’s walking stick and multimedia presentations detailing important figures and events in Jewish history. As well as celebrating Vienna’s Jewish culture, the museum aims to challenge prejudices by presenting the anti-Semitism that members of the faith have had to endure.
